Heat pumps function similarly to traditional hot water tanks but utilise the technology found in reverse cycle air-conditioners for heating water with exceptional efficiency. This innovative approach involves the use of refrigerant gas within an electric pump to generate heat. Heat pumps, air conditioners, reverse cycle systems—they all operate on this shared principle.

Heat pump hot water units generally come in two configurations: either the heat pump is integrated atop the tank or it is positioned separately, resembling a split system air-conditioner. Their efficiency is so good that governments offer rebates for their installation. This incentive aims to alleviate strain on the electrical grid network when transitioning from electric storage hot water systems and reduce pressure on gas delivery when switching from gas storage hot water systems.

The average rebate amount typically ranges around the $2000 mark depending on factors such as your suburb, the type of hot water system you install and other factors like if you’re changing from gas or electric.

Some companies may advertise inflated rebate amounts, such as “GET $4000 IN REBATES,” but this often involves deceptive pricing tactics. In reality, they may charge $8000 for installation and claim that you’re receiving a $4000 rebate, creating a false sense of savings or give you a good price and then only tell you on the day of installation that you need an extra part that was “unforeseen” by the salesperson (Yep, we hear all the stories first hand)

We prioritise transparency regarding rebates. We provide you with an accurate assessment of the rebate you’re eligible for, outlined in a legal document. Currently, there are three rebates available for eligible customers: VEEC, STC and a Victoria Solar rebate.

We are licensed and registered for the Victorian rebate scheme, Just contact us and let us know you are interested or fill out our inquiry form, and we will then most likely give you two options, an option to apply for the rebate for a heat pump hot water system and an option to replace the hot water unit like-for-like. This way you get more options and the best of both worlds, unlike other companies that will push you for the rebate only because they make more money from it. Even though there is a rebate and heat pumps save you more money, you have to remember heat pumps are more expensive to purchase and install in some cases and the rebate does not cover all the cost, so you will still be a little out of pocket.

Solar hot water systems are a great and very efficient way to heat your hot water, but here are a few reasons why we don’t love them and therefore choose not to install them.
1. They are very expensive. Expect to pay 3-4 times the price compared to installing a heat pump, even with the rebate included for both. With that cost, you are better off investing your money into solar panels if you don’t have them.
2. Exposed to the full elements The sun, wind, rain, hot and cold temperatures, there is no better place to experience the full force of it than on a roof! It is not a hot water system best friend, we have seen valves that bust from the long exposers to the elements or tanks leak etc, after a few years when the hot water tank needs servicing or the valves burst, you will be paying a 3x fee for a plumber to get on a roof to fix it for you. Also, replacing them in the future is very expensive.
3. You lose roof space and that might be valuable for someone who wants to get solar in the future which is a much better investment we think.
For these reasons, we just don’t recommend it and recommend you just stick to traditional hot water systems or the heat pump, keep everything on the ground we say.
